    SDA RESIDENCES
PART 3 OF 3 - COMPLIANCE VERSUS BEST PRACTICE (DESIGN LAYOUTS)

The SDA Design Standards mandate a kitchen, bathroom, living and dining area, entrance, and 1 bedroom per participant. They do not mandate carpark, outdoor areas, separate bathrooms, OOA, or study areas, but all of these areas should be considered. Read More

    SDA RESIDENCES
PART 2 OF 3 - COMPLIANCE VERSUS BEST PRACTICE (FUTURE PROOF YOUR DESIGN)

When asked to design an SDA dwelling, one of the first questions we are asked is, “which categories should the design target?” Our view is that it is best practice to provide flexibility in the design to appeal to as many participant categories as possible, and to allow for ‘age-in-place’. SDA RESIDENCES
PART 1 OF 3 - COMPLIANCE versus BEST PRACTICE (INTRODUCTION)

SDA DESIGN STANDARDS – “At the centre of the NDIS is the need to maximise the choice and control of the participant, and to promote opportunities for social and economic participation. THE CLIENT – ARCHITECT RELATIONSHIP

ARCHITECTURE – the art of planning, designing, and realising the construction of buildings, structures, and built environments.

The appointment of an Architect is one that should not be taken lightly. Whether you are selecting an Architect to design and bring to life your family home, or selecting an Architect with whom you are looking to build a long-term commercial relationship to deliver on-going projects, the relationship between a client and their Architect is critical to any project’s success. WHICH PROPERTY IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

As Architects, we are often asked by client’s what type of property, and with what characteristics, should they be looking for. Unfortunately, there is no one property type that fits all, and one of the common conundrums facing land purchasers is how and where to find a property that will provide flexibility across all market influences, uses, short- and long-term returns, and security. MELBOURNE ARCHITECTURE – A NEW DIRECTION

Architecture can be summarised as the art of planning, designing, and realising the construction of buildings, structures, and built environments, through manipulation and co-ordination of materials and technology, light and shadow, form and function. At its best it is an emotive expression of sculptural art that enriches and creates the backdrop to our daily lives. It should always be recognised that Architecture responds to the requirements of the users and the functions conducted within that space. Read More

    2020 – A YEAR LIKE NO OTHER

Following a surprise coalition victory in the 2019 Federal election, the downturn being experienced within the building industry seemed to be short-lived. Confidence was back in the public and private sector, and the government and industry were looking forward to continued growth and investment. Fast forward less than a year, and not only was the Australian economy, industry, and society in a downward spiral, but so was the rest of the world thanks to Covid-19.

CHALLENGES OF MODERN BUILDING DESIGN :
    PART 4 OF 4

All buildings, whether a small residential extension, or multi-level mixed use complex will have varying degrees of defects throughout the construction process. Typical construction contracts include time provisions and processes to allow for rectification of these defects. Additionally, mandatory warranty periods provide further confidence to the end-user should any defects arise post the contract period.

Historically the Architect has had many roles. They were responsible for the exterior and interior design of a building, they were the urban designer and planner, the engineer, the project manager, the supervisor, and at times even the builder. As skills developed and construction became more complex it was inevitable that the tasks originally performed by the Architect would become more specialised.

    CHALLENGES OF MODERN BUILDING DESIGN
    PART 1 of 4

Post the Grenfell tragedy in the UK, the wake-up call of Lacrosse Apartments in Melbourne’s Docklands, and the averted disasters of the Opal Tower Apartments and Mascot Towers in Sydney, there is a growing call for assurance that new construction is completed properly and safely.
