Victoria Street

Five level residential Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) apartment complex consisting of a three level street façade and two recessive upper levels. The central urban complex includes 10 SDA apartments, 1 Overnight On-site Accommodation (OOA), street level retail, a rooftop terrace and associated car park. Featuring a vibrant, bold and contemporary design predominately aimed at appealing to younger disabled participants, where past options were not available.

The design draws on the industrial heritage area undergoing transformation and rejuvenation with a renewed emphasis on establishing a more organic and liveable environment while adapting to modern living standards. The design focuses on nurturing a refreshed interface at pedestrian scale where form considers the rapidly evolving nature and character of the precinct and contributes to this by breaking down the street barrier through the integration of green spaces. This results in a residence that expands on the restoration of the area, all the while drawing from the existing and evolving urban fabric to create cohesion and continuity without a reliance on conformity.

Complex features and intricate tactile details to create functionality, longevity and visual interest. The transition of form from a continuous mass to the recessive upper levels, an open inviting destination with a vertical introduction of the existing landscape vein and connection to earth and nature is intertwined into the design form. Consideration required for the narrow streets and the compact site dimensions to guarantee accessible amenities available for potential participants. Design provides the ability to introduce landscape and homeliness into an industrial zone and achieve equilibrium between functionality, aesthetics and inclusivity, contributing positively to the continuous transition and offerings within the industrial heritage area.
