Pentridge Heritage Precinct Coburg
Pentridge Heritage Precinct Coburg
Completed 2000's
The consideration was to reinvigorate one of Melbourne’s historic landmarks and transform it into a vibrant inner suburb residential and commercial hub. We needed to work with the existing buildings, to restore, renovate, dismantle and rebuild as required to create this stage of a multi stage development that comprises of townhouses, apartments, commercial buildings and civic spaces.
Inspiration was taken from the history of the precinct itself and the existing heritage buildings, particularly the industrial and warehouse nature of the work barracks for a series of two level townhouses. The extended masterplan consisted of restoration, renovation and re-envisaging of the historic buildings (B and D division) and elements within Pentridge such as exposing the existing materials (walls, timber trusses), and the famous watch towers.
Careful consideration by CBG Architects was needed in the creation of Urban Design / Masterplan for the precinct to achieve this commercial and residential hub that promotes a sense of community and integrates with the broader inner – suburban surrounds of Coburg. Strong community and local council collaboration led to the urban design response being promoted by council as an exemplary example of urban design within an existing suburban precinct
