Gordon Street Elsternwick

Gordon Street Elsternwick

Completed 2005

G2 Apartments

Careful design consideration was required to create a new modern housing typology situated in an area well known for its large homes and older styles apartment blocks. This bold five level residential building with forty-five apartments targeted for young professionals, has a rear façade to the train lines, and a stepped treatment transitioning to Gordon Street to overcome the acoustic and privacy issues of the site.

Inspiration was taken from the triangular shaped site which backs onto train lines, with the train line façade capturing the movement of the trains with shifting vertical elements combined into its treatment. Complementing this façade, greater openness and softer forms have been incorporated into the design as the building transitions to Gordon Street, with large leaf elements (negative and positive) set into the concrete panels.
