Haughton Road

Located in Clayton’s residential area and in close proximity to the commercial area, medical centre, transport and activity centre, the four level residential building integrates Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) and non-SDA residences. Designed to facilitate improved integration of independent living for those with disabilities by providing accommodation for independent living of all degrees of SDA participants, from Improved Liveability to High Physical SDA requirements. Consideration for circulation, access and egress, and on-site support and carers for residents was vital.

The four level building responds to the objectives for transition between present-day Clayton and the transformative long term vision for the area within a single apartment complex and the broader community. Inspired by the surrounding post war residences typical throughout many older Melbourne suburbs, the design predominately featuring brick conveys a residential feel and a strong relationship to the existing streetscapes and public spaces. The brick pattern creates visual interest and its projected shadows create a kinetic façade throughout the day, while the brick diagonals represent the pitched roofs of the adjoining properties. Exposed concrete slabs are the architectural re-interpretation of the railway movement and its horizontal lines.

Landscaping to all boundaries provides a continuous network of fine-grain active frontages with balconies, clear glazing and street views from all common areas. Form is articulated through various setbacks to respect the adjoining properties proportion and massing. Balconies and clear glazing in lobby, corridors and habitable rooms provide street views and passive surveillance. Balconies facing west and east have been designed carefully to consider overlooking and equitable development opportunity.
