Carlisle Street St Kilda
Town Planning Approved
Iconic, landmark building to raise the bar with respect to Social Housing and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). Set in the built environment, it will form a prominent visual anchor point in one of Melbourne’s busiest intersections - St Kilda Road and Carlisle Street. The design objective is to reinforce this key intersection of the St Kilda Rd precinct through high quality architecture, scale transition and a strong address to each street frontage.
The response a multi-level, high quality residences in a suburb that has historically been recognised for its apartment living with strong visual impact. The design looks to facilitate integration of social housing and independent living for those with disabilities within the complex and the community in large.
Design quality architecture minimizing building bulk and promoting vertical articulation with its sculptured, bold street wall to respond to the existing mass and form of the surroundings. Creating a modest form to the main building facades to produce a single architectural language and a unified architectural response that compliments the streetwall design.
Careful consideration has been given to acoustics, security and privacy due to the busy nature of the corner and the residential interface of the adjoining apartment complexes to create comfortable living environments. Attention was also incorporated into the street corner activation, pedestrian movement and street life within the design.
