CORNER ALMA + ST KILDA ROADS ST KILDA
Town Planning Approved
Seventeen level, high quality residential complex with associated commercial tenancies and communal facilities designed as an iconic landmark building for one of Melbourne’s busiest intersections. Design integrates acoustic, privacy and security considerations due to the busy nature of the corner location.
Strong and grounded vertical corner presence created at the apex of St Kilda hill with its spire slender form creating a visual marker. Dual mass and design with one identity encompasses slender and dynamic reflections with inspiration drawn from the nearby Presbyterian Church. The streamlined vertical corner spire façade detailing allows for less focus on levels and more on the overall sculptural aesthetic, and is complemented by the bolder shoulder elements to provide transition to the surrounding buildings.
Design philosophy focuses on the expression of clean lines, light materiality, folded surface utilising angled glazing to capture prominent views, creating interest and a sense of scale for the overall design form. Consideration is given to the existing contextual rhythms without conforming to the usual horizontal aesthetic.
